Strand resident Deon Germishuys chipped in at the final hole to win the South Final of the Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series at King David Mowbray Golf Club on Sunday.
At stake was a trip to compete in the Junior North and South Championship at Pinehurst in America in July.
The reigning SA amateur champion, Germishuys was part of an elite field of eight
South African junior golfers competing in the 36 hole series final.
There was a three-way battle on the final nine with Germishuys, Christo Lamprecht and Sam Simpson exchanging birdies. Simpson’s par putt on the final hole lipped out leaving all three players on -8.
Up stepped Germishuys and his 15-metre chip from out of the rough behind the green rolled in for a single shot victory, thanks to a stunning 65 in his afternoon round.
“I just had a feeling I would sink it. From the moment I made the shot, it was on line and I watched it pitch and roll into the hole. It was the best feeling in the world,” said the 18-year-old Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation member.
The past 10 months have been huge for Germishuys, who lifted the SA amateur title in February and then added a second Nomads SA Boys under-19 Stroke Play trophy to his groaning mantle.
He says his incredible run of form over the last nine months, was sparked by his success in the first Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series event at Royal Cape Golf Club in June 2017.
Germishuys and the winner of the North Final of the Bridge Junior Series, will compete in two warm-up events in North Carolina before they head to Pinehurst Country Club to join the field of 90 boys and 90 girls to compete in the 54-hole stroke play event.
