Helderberg Village Music Society presents a concert by the guitarist James Grace.
James studied at the Royal College of Music in London and was the first guitarist in the history of the College to receive the prestigious Tagore Gold Medal, an annual award presented to the most outstanding student.
He then spent two years in Doha teaching at an international music centre, after which he returned to South Africa as head of classical guitar studies at the University of Cape Town’s College of Music.
James has frequently performed throughout Southern Africa, Europe and the UAE. Highlights in his career were the South African premier performance of Rodrigo’s Concierto Madrigal for two guitars with Jonathan Crossley and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Alessandro Crudele in 2012 and more recently Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and visiting Dutch conductor Arjan Tien.
In 2018 he organised and performed a nationwide tour with Mexican guitarist Morgan Szymanksi. The duo subsequently toured Mexico in 2019. Two of James’ albums have received SAMA awards, the most recent being his seventh solo studio album Andaluza – Music of Spain III for Best Classical Album.
