Egdemead High School hosted Somerset College’s rugby, netball, hockey and soccer teams, from under-14 to under-19, on Friday May 3 and Saturday May 4.
In what was a close encounter with a scoreline of 21-17 in the boys’ under-19 rugby clash, the home side clinched victory in the dying minutes of the second half.
Edgemead’s under-19 coach, Gerhard Sheppard said it was a tough morning for their teams, but they managed to do well against a stubborn Somerset College side.
“Somerset College derby day, yes, we had a tough day the whole day, they are a really good sport. All age groups from under-14 up until the first team really put their hands up. We had a tough game, in the end we pulled it through and got it done. For the next game, it’s no guts, no glory, that is all I can say. Just like today, luckily we showed all guts and all glory,” said Sheppard.
Head of rugby at Somerset College, Liso Langman said it was an eagerly anticipated clash, noting that it had been many years since they last competed against Edgemead.
“It was a lovely opportunity for us to test what we have going on, I am really proud of all our Somerset teams. Tight scores all round, under-15’s got good results, under-16 got good results. The under-14s and the First Fifteen fell short. But overall a great day, very well hosted. No fights in any of the games, which is quite important; the kids are playing for the sake of playing rugby. We really enjoyed it,” said Langman.
