Although originally conceived as a temporary attraction, EARTHBOX has decided to extend its stay at Lourensford wine estate.
As a standalone experience, EARTHBOX is a journey into the earth and an experience of the ancient world beneath our feet, but the first season also launched a programme of live music concerts (Sunday Sessions) and a series of once-off culinary events with top chefs (Chef Series).
Wellness events; from soul celebrations to Secret Sunrise, yoga and pilates have also been a part of the Spring to Autumn seasons.
EARTHBOX owner, and founder of The Dream Commission, Marina Busse, says: “In creating EARTHBOX, our idea was to give visitors a fleeting, awe-inspiring experience within the Earth, but we’ve found that people who have been once come back time and again.
“We’ve also had a lot of interest in the space for private events. We are excited to move into a new season with EARTHBOX and to build on the success we’ve had to date.”
In the process of creating EARTHBOX, a team of top engineers and geologists were consulted to ensure that safety was a top priority. The same team were brought back to give the structure the green light for continued use.
Built during the winter of 2023, the wettest in a hundred years, EARTHBOX has already been weather tested. A system of drains and outlets, that were built-in beneath and around the structure, ensures the chamber stays dry.
Lourensford Estate owner, Jacob Wiese, said the Estate was, “Delighted to retain EARTHBOX as a more permanent fixture. It is with a sense of pride and commitment to excellence in all things that South Africa can both reach back into its history and strive for a prosperous future.
“EARTHBOX is a rare glimpse into a history so ancient as to be almost timeless. It showcases what can be achieved when creative, passionate and talented South Africans see beyond the daily struggles and challenges of life into the magnificence of creation – a creation that has predated and will long outlast our turbulent times.”
During the winter months, EARTHBOX will be open Thursday to Sunday, and from June to August the ticket price will be 20% off and will include an audio tour.
Regular events will continue. Visit earthbox.co.za for more information.
