The Girls 1st Hockey team from Somerset College were meant to take part in the St Mary’s Waverley Hockey Festival in the 2020 April holidays, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the hockey tour could not take place. The team set about covering the distance from Somerset College to St Mary’s together as a team by running, or walking the 1 400km over four weeks on home turf. Furthermore, they decided that the funds raised by them would go to a local charity named Hope and Light Community Welfare in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village. Each hockey team member also donated a blanket for each of the 25 children in the Hope and Light Children’s’ Home, which were delivered by the four matric players to this children’s home in Sir Lowry’s Pass. A special mention must be made of both Stephanie Bihl (captain) and Michaella Beart (vice-captain), who contributed 276km and 235km respectively to the
1 400km goal. The team also set the target of raising R21 000 by the time they had completed the 1400km goal.
