Willie Bester, the famous South African artist, has sculpted a magnificent statue of a flying horse The Apocalypse Horse 1. It stands 3.3 metres high in front of the Moór Art Gallery in Franschhoek.
This is the first horse made by Willie for a South African collection. His other horses stand in Changsha, China, Los Angeles, USA, London and Las Palmas.
Willie turns bits of scrap iron into a work of art. He starts with a concept then scours the scrap yards in Cape Town, Worcester and Robertson for just the right pieces of scrap, from gears to brake drums to prop shafts, in order to fashion his art.
The horse will be unveiled on June 4, at 11am, which will coincide with the gallery’s latest solo exhibition – Nicolaas Maritz’s Landscape and Star.
The South African Print Gallery has recently joined up with Moór Gallery and will be running a solo by Joshua Miles-Overberg Prints – a selection of recent woodcuts (on Saturday June 4, to coincide with the unveiling.)
The Moór Gallery is situated in one of Franschhoek’s lovely old buildings, Bordeaux House, in the town’s historic core and has been stunningly renovated internally to suit an art gallery.
Bordeaux House was built in 1900 as a boarding house for girls attending the local school – itself one of the oldest schools in South Africa. The house was owned by a Miss Albertyn, a music teacher at the school.
