The Off-Broadway jukebox musical, The Marvelous Wonderettes, written by Rodger Bean and directed by Emma-Amber Ferguson will be on stage at The Drama Factory from Thursday May 9, to Sunday May 12.
The production has earned Origen Productions two Fleur du Cap nominations from their 2022 run.
Audiences will be transported to the 1958 Springfield High School prom where they will meet the Wonderettes: Cindy Lou, Missy, Suzy and Betty Jean who are four girls with dreams as big as their crinoline skirts.
The Wonderettes will thrill audiences with classic hits from the 50’s and 60’s that we all love. Hits such as Lollipop, Stupid Cupid, Dream Lover, Respect, You don’t own me and so much more. Audiences have never had this much fun at prom, and they never will forget this must-take trip down memory lane.
Audiences of all ages will not only be exposed to a new piece of musical theatre, but they will recognise the songs that they either grew up hearing or their parents or grandparents blasting it in the car while driving.
Act 1 takes place in 1958 at Springfield High School prom and pays homage to the high school Songleader squads of the 50s. When called upon to be the entertainment at senior prom as a last minute replacement, the Wonderettes, rally together to entertain their classmates in four-part harmony.
Secrets are exposed, high-school crushes are revealed and a fight for prom queen puts the girls friendships to the test.
In Act 2, the four ladies return to Springfield ten years later for their 10 year reunion. Skirts are shorter but their hair is higher. Tongues are sharper but belly’s are rounder- especially Suzy’s (being that she is in her final trimester of pregnancy).
The girls have traded in their 50’s doo-wop hits for 60’s soul classics. Ten years apart has left bitter feelings between them but will a trip down memory lane and the power of song be enough to bring this group back together?
Shows are on Thursday May 9, at 7.30pm, Friday May 10, at 7.30pm, Saturday May 11, at 3pm and on Sunday May 12 at 3pm. Tickets cost R170 and R200 and R160 on Sunday May 12 as part of a Mother’s Day promotion.
