Strand Surf Lifesaving Club competed at the Western Cape Surf Lifesaving Championships for Juniors and Seniors, which was held at Milnerton beach on February 24 and February 25.
Competitors from clubs all over the Western Cape battled it out in the waves and on the beach, with Strand ending overall fifth.
In the under-15 section, Kyle Kirstein got a second place for both the flags, as well as the beach sprint events; Nicholas Lombard came third in the board race and second in the run-swim-run event; and Jake Love came second in the board race and surfswim events.
In under-17, Cyle Fredericks came third in the beach sprint event, while Clayton Hogan came third in the flags event.
A total of five Strand under-17 girls finished in the top seven positions in the beach long run event. Julia Robb won the event, with her sister Lauren in second place, Jessica Mcilroy in fourth place, Daniela Di Maio in fifth place and Amy-Lee Hobson in seventh place. Lauren ended in second place in the beach sprint event.
Taylor Yates won the beach sprint event, and was part of the winning beach relay team, with teammates Megan Kreft, Lauren and Julia Robb, who won this event.
Mia Kelbrick showed her strength in the swim events, and got a third place for the run-swim-run event, and a fourth place in the surfswim event.
Kira Bester received the prize for top under-17 girl competitor at the championships, by winning all the individual water events for her age group (five in total including an iron woman event).
She also teamed up with Mila Watson to receive a second place for the junior double ski event.
In under-19 and the open section, Rebecca Carter-Smith came third in the open iron woman event, which includes a swim, board and ski leg, as well as a run leg in between each of the disciplines.
Megan Kreft, who competed for South Africa in the International Surf Challenge in New Zealand in 2017, showed her strength and won both the under-19 flags and beach sprints events, as well as the open beach sprints event.
