■ Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, headquartered in Somerset West, recently donated nine cartons of fruit to the Rotary Health Days, held in October in support of the Western Cape Macassar community. Tru-Cape is the largest exporter of South African apples and pears into more than 104 countries. This is the fifth event the Rotary Helderberg has facilitated, with volunteering health-care professionals, and included screening tests for vision, HIV/Aids, pap smears and breast examinations, and other pre-emptive screenings to check blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure. “The services provided (opticians, Desmond Tutu Foundations, Mothers to Mothers and Oral Hygienists among others) were offered pro bono for this occasion. Youth groups of the area as well as community members also volunteered for this,” said District 9350 Rotary Helderberg Sunrise Club president Casper Kruger. Marketing director Conrad Fick said “community service organisations such as Rotary and Lions make a huge difference to the people and groups they support”.
