Mandela Day 2016 for Masikhule was a heart-warming experience, and the organisation would like to thank everyone who took part in their Cast On 4 Kids, giving time, effort, skills, money and more, for the benefit of the children in the marginalised communities of the Helderberg.
Masikhule is a local NPO that trains women in early childhood development (ECD), and also mentors 30 ECD centres in the surrounding informal settlements. Cast On 4 Kids was their Mandela Day initiative to collect warm items for the nearly 2 000 children under the age of six, who are being educated in these pre-schools and crèches.
Erinvale hosted the event, and for three hours people from all over the Helderberg popped in to drop off donations or to sit and knit, crochet and sew up squares with them. Each ECD centre received a bag with blankets, beanies, toys and scarves, jerseys or mitts, courtesy of Cast On 4 Kids. For more information visit www.masikhule.org.
