The Drama Factory presents the South African premiere run of Gail Louw’s internationally acclaimed play, The Good Dad, from Tuesday June 28 to Sunday July 3.
The new, South African production, Die Goeie Pa, is created by the award-winning creative team that created The Unlikely Secret Agent, which was nominated for eight Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards, with Paul du Toit winning Best Director.
Presented by Unlikely Productions, the play features Erika Marais, who was nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of Eleanor Kasrils in The Unlikely Secret Agent.
Paul du Toit translated the text into Afrikaans for Die Goeie Pa and once again collaborates with Erika to direct her in this play. The South African premiere run of Gail Louw’s play follows two highly successful runs in London.
Comments about the production include, “A must-see” (Broadway World); “Heartfelt, raw and vivid” (London Pub Theatres); “Brutally honest. Well worth an hour of anyone’s time” (Pocket Size Theatre) and, “Utterly compelling” (View from the Outside).
The play, explores the dramatic journey of three characters, a mother and her twin daughters, and the psychological effects of their abuse: denial, guilt, jealousy and Stockholm Syndrome.
The play is a powerful but gentle telling of a devastating story, a moving account of survival and redemption.
“Gail Louw’s lyrical text lends itself to theatre of the mind and so for the design of this production, I wanted to allow the audience space to engage with the various prisons that keep these characters captive, joining them in their search for absolution, redemption, and freedom” says director Paul du Toit.
“I am honoured to be performing this important story in my home country, South Africa, and in my home language, Afrikaans,” says actress and producer Erika Marais.
Presented by Unlikely Productions, Die Goeie Pa, is written by Gail Louw, performed by Erika Marais and translated and directed by Paul du Toit. Sound design is by Jahan Beukes.
Audiences should note that the play has a PG 16 for Mature Content GBV. The play will be performed at The Drama Factory from Tuesday June 28 to Saturday July 2 at 7.30pm. On Wednesday June 29 and Saturday July 2, shows will be at 3.30pm and on Sunday July 3, the show starts at 4pm.
