Sharpen your knitting needles and don’t let anyone pull the wool over your eyes, because the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument (ATM) will be hosting its annual knit-athon on Saturday June 9 in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day.
This initiative, which is done in conjunction with Paarl Museum and Friends of Paarl Museum as well as the Dorkas and Busy Beez women clubs, is in line with the day’s goal of inspiring individuals to make the world a better place by giving 67 minutes of their time to make a difference in someone’s life.
In the run-up to the day, donations of non-perishable food, stationery and clothing can also be dropped off at the museums. Participants can warm the hearts of the needy and help them to survive the winter by knitting a garment for them, such as a scarf, sweater or blanket. Everybody is challenged to knit; if you cannot knit, the clubs will teach you faster than you can say the word “needle”.
The knit-athon takes place from 9am to 2pm at Paarl Museum on Van der Lingen Square. Participants must bring their own knitting needles and are encouraged to bring wool, but wool (and refreshments) will be provided. The knitting will be handed out with soup and bread to adults and children in need on July 18.
Donations of wool, non-perishable food, stationery for children, useful old clothes and blankets can be dropped off by July 11 at the Afrikaans Language Museum in Pastorie Avenue or Paarl Museum on Van der Lingen Square.
