The indoor endurance cycling event, Cycling for Life, takes place on Saturday June 1, from 6am to 6pm, at the Activity Centre, De Hoop Primary School, Somerset West.
Sponsored teams of cyclists spin on their bikes mounted on trainers for 12 hours, to raise funds for Helderberg Hospice.
Each team member rides for an hour at a time, and at the top of the hour, the number of kilometres clocked up is recorded in a database.
Music sets the tone and fuels the pace, backed up by food stalls, drinks and spot prizes throughout the day to boost the cyclists’ staying power.
Many of the cyclists ride because they have been personally touched by the special care of Helderberg Hospice.
Some ride in memory of a loved one, others in solidarity with friends or family receiving treatment for cancer.
Teams can enter into one of several categories:
Solo saddle challenge (one member);
Challenge team (three members);
Corporate team (four to twelve members);
Social team (four to twelve members);
Youth team (four to twelve members).
Each team is asked to raise a minimum of R3 600 entry fee.
For a team of 12, this equates to R300 per person to reach this target.
Cycling for Life is one of the most important community fundraisers for Helderberg Hospice.
Individuals wanting to ride for the full 12 hours are welcome to take up the solo saddle challenge. The entry fee is R500, but solo riders are encouraged to raise additional sponsorships.
The following restrictions apply to all entries:
Road bikes: front chain ring maximum 53, rear cassette minimum 11;
Mountain bikes: front chain ring maximum 44, rear cassette minimum 11.
Cycling for Life is a day for the whole family – there will be food and drinks on sale, big screen TV and fun activities for children.
