* Hot wheels – riders in action.
Organised and managed by members of the Paarl Rotary Club, under the auspices of the Pedal Power Association (PPA), the proceeds from this event go towards sustaining Paarl Rotary’s many charitable projects.
The routes include virgin single track on private land which has been opened up exclusively for the event. The 40km, 30km and 15km routes contain some of the best scenery in the area, with great views of the winelands with Table Mountain in the background.
The children’s 4km ride is an undulating route of two circuits on and around the estate.
The roads are 80 percent jeep track, with some single-track and open roads in between. There are some solid climbs, from meandering S-bend climbs to vicious little bumps with fast-forwards downhills to recover.
The 40km, in particular, includes a long, continuous steep climb of 630m, only for fit and experienced riders, with areas where walking may be necessary.
However, this ride will be easier than last year’s gruelling course. The 30km is geared for fit, experienced riders and includes one long climbs. The 15km is geared for novices and beginners.
A special feature of the longer races will be the pontoon bridge over a dam near the finish to create some thrills, but hopefully no spills, for daring cyclists.
The 40km route starts at 8.30am, the 30km medium route starts at 9am, the 15km short route starts at 9.15am and the 4km children’s race starts at 9.30am. It is an undulating route of two circuits of 2.5km on and around the estate.
The long route requires more technical riding skills – it should be seen as a challenge and is aimed at the fit rider, definitely not for the inexperienced.
The prize giving and cut-off time will be at 12.30pm.
On-line entries are accepted until midnight on Wednesday August 17. Late entries will be accepted on the day of the race (R240 for all races except for the 4km race which remains R50).
