The Hottentots Holland Dramatic Society (HHDS) will stage The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at The Playhouse Theatre, Lourensford Road, Somerset West, from Friday February 15 to Saturday March 2.
It is loved across generations and has great lessons about the power of good over evil that will always be relevant in society.
The HHDS strives to perform a variety of show styles as it follows on from The Diary of Anne Frank that utilized surround sound and an unconventional stage setting where audience members were seated on the stage, and Baby with the Bathwater with its striking absurdism.
In The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the HHDS continues to experiment with styles as influenced in the west by the 20th century art movements as it did in the aforementioned productions.
From deep psychological symbolism that goes way over the heads of children, to harsh lighting effects, the design of which is headed by Jessica Yoko.
Rory Currin’s double projection methods and technical enhancements, and the creation of a lion puppet by
the Loft Theatre Puppet Company, add to the artistry seen on stage.
The dancing is not scripted but has been created by Soleil van der Heyde to summon the spirit of Narnia.
Many of the scenes rely heavily on specific body movements, the physicality of which is reminiscent of ancient Japanese and Greek chorus pieces.
The show runs from Friday February 15 to Saturday March 2,
