Acting skills by pupils from Paul Roos Gymnasium saw them walk away with two huge acting prizes at the recently hosted Filmit Festival awards ceremony.
According to information provided by the school, pupils took part in the Filmit Festival competition this year by submitting one documentary, Awé: an insight into language in SA and one short film Hit & Mis.
After being judged by a panel of 22 industry professionals who served as judges in this year’s competition, Paul Roos was nominated in categories Best Documentary, Best Ensemble and Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
A category in which the pupils excelled. Young actors Ian Lubbe, Jordan Cridland, Reuben de Wit, Altus van Heerden and Nelis Venter walked away with the ‘Best Ensemble’ award for their acting in the short film Hit & Mis.
“They won a ClemenGold cash prize of R1000 and an acting coaching session with stage and film actor Stian Bam,” the school states.
Joshua Cridland walked away with an award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He also won a ClemenGold cash prize of R1000, a coaching session with actor Deon Lotz and a cameo appearance alongside 3 other winning actors in a special episode on soap opera Suidooster.
“The Filmit Festival is a Paul Roos Gymnasium initiative – aimed at career and skills development within the digital sphere, creating experiential learning opportunities for creative learners from Southern Africa, and creating a platform for authentic African stories to be told and shared,” the school revealed more about the film-making competition.
The Filmit Festival ran for the second consecutive year with partners Suidooster and ClemenGold. At the awards ceremony on Friday November 4, the Filmit Festival announced a brand new and exciting partnership with the popular Cape Town arts festival – Suidoosterfees.
The 2023 mentorship programme for aspiring filmmakers will be hosted at Artscape and form part of Suidooster’s youth programme. The school expressed their excitement about this new partnership and the value it will add to the competition and its participants.
