The Endler Concert Series, in partnership with the Stellenbosch University Transformation office and the Womens Forum, will present a concert in celebration of Womens’ Day, on Tuesday August 8, at 8pm, in the Endler Hall. The evening weaves together through jazz music, visual art and poetry the stories and celebration of women. The Stellenbosch University Jazz Band take centre stage under the direction of Felicia Lesch, joined by jazz legend Gloria Bosman and jazz singer and poet Mihi-Tuwi Matshingana. In particular, the evening honours Charlotte Mannya Maxeke – the first South African black woman to journey to tertiary education, graduating in the USA in 1901. Her mantra ”When you rise, lift someone up with you” is an admonition that artists Felicia Lesch, Gloria Bosman and Mihi-Tuwi Matshingana all embrace. Felicia is passionate about music as a vehicle for social change, and formed the SU Jazz Band as one of the ensembles of the Certificate Programme. South African author and journalist Zubeida Jaffer’s book Beauty of the heart – a tribute to Charlotte Maxeke – will be on sale, and there is a jewellery exhibition by Kutlwano Cele, a student of the Visual Arts Department. Tickets cost R80, R60 for pensioners and R30 for students and scholars, and are available through Computicket and at the door. Contact Fiona Grayer at concerts@sun.ac.za or 021 808 2358.
