The annual Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) open day takes place at the Newlands Fire Base this Saturday, November 25 from 9am until 4pm.
Join VWS as it demonstrates fire-fighting skills and raises awareness about wild fires.
This is VWS’s big fund-raising event of the year ahead of fire season, which affords the organisation the opportunity to interact with the public, without whose support, VWS would not exist.
It is through the support of the public, that crews from Jonkershoek and Newlands Fire Bases were able to fight the fires which raged across Sir Lowry’s Pass and along the mountainside above Gordon’s Bay recently.
Activities for children – and adult children – include abseiling, snake displays, firefighting equipment demonstrations, fire truck rides, tug-of-war, indoor and outdoor exhibitions, helicopters and the best dressed fire-kid competition.
The helicopter and firefighting displays will be followed by an end-of-day foam party.
There will also be food stalls available to keep the hunger at bay.
A variety of merchandise including firefighting toys will be on sale.
Children can be pre-registered for activities on the day by visiting http://goo.gl/kVgkHn
Registration of children is compulsory to allow them to take part in the various activities on the day.
Payment on the day may only be made in cash, or via Snapscan.
Entry is free on the day, but donations in aid of fighting wildfires are welcome.
