■ On Sunday June 4, the Somerset West Unitarian Fellowship is meeting in the “chapel” of Vonke House, across from The Playhouse, at 10.30am. The speaker will be Dave Mayes, a member of the Cape Town Unitarian Community for the past 12 years. He will discuss the subject of compassion, what it really means, and how we might develop our feelings of compassion for humanity in this complex, chaotic world where we live. One topic in the presentation will be the Charter for Compassion, which was initiated by Karen Armstrong, former nun, author of many books on the history of religious thought, and a frequent BBC presenter. Religious leaders from world faiths and submissions from thousands of people around the world helped to create this document, which begins with the statement: “The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves.” Refreshments will be available afterwards. Entry is free, but an offering can be made to cover expenses. Contact Dave at 021 850 0863 or davidjeanmayes@gmail.com
