Musiekindaba, a first for Afrikaans music, brings together the music industry, artists and music lovers to work together, build relationships, share knowledge and to celebrate the wonderful world of music.
The festival is presenting a series of 10 concerts with some of the biggest names in Afrikaans and South African music, from Wednesday November 30 to Saturday December 3, in Stellenbosch.
The series of concerts, under the banner Musiekspyskaart, offers ten concerts at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre, the Fismer, the Endler and the Adam Small Theatre.
Musicians and producers Schalk Joubert and Melissa van der Spuy curated this unique and exciting series of performances.
Some of the productions kick-starting Musiekspyskaart, include Toonsettings van die digters, by Dean Balie and Collin Meyer on Wednesday November 30, at 7pm at the Fismer.
Mr Balie won five Fiëstas awards for Die poet, wie’s hy?, a musical production on the work of Adam Small. Toonsettings is a further look into the healing possibilities of the words of poets.
Pianist Rocco de Villiers will entice audiences with his, Boeremusiek en mirrorballs, production also on November 30, at 8pm at the Endler. Mr de Villiers and his band will entertain with the work of Jim Muller, Nico Carstens, Hansie Roodt and Mynie Reyes. Boeremusiek will never sound the same again.
Rocker Arno Carstens with Hassan’adas and Sima Mashazi will present Rock & Rumba on November 30, at 8pm at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre.
John Hassan is the leader of Hassan’adas, a group that specialises in dance styles like the salsa, rumba, samba and African rhythms. Add to that some strong voices and Arno’s work in English and Afrikaans and you will be sure of a magical night of music and dance.
Then Dizu Plaatjies and Ibuyambo presents The Notes of the Ancestral Spirits on Thursday December 1, at 1pm at the Fismer. Forefathers were regularly contacted by mediums through dreams and information about the cause of sickness, death and other problems was passed on to the next generation.
Mr Plaatjies and Ibuyambo will showcase this ancient way of communiction through music and dance.
Ramon Alexander is known a one of the leaders in Cape jazz and goema. He will present two productions, Ode aan Goema and Ramon Alexander Sextet with Nicolas Miso.
In these two productions Mr Alexander will share his stories and new arrangements with a special focus on the work of Ibrahim Khalil Shihab. This will take place on Thursday December and Friday December 2, at the Fismer.
Amanda Strydom, Coenraad Rall, Frank Freeman, can be seen in Hoe ons voel on Thursday December 1 and Friday December 2, at the Adam Small Theatre. In this production, Amanda Strydom looks at the life and work of her friend Ralph Rabie, also known as Johannes Kerkorrel, an icon we lost too soon.
In Hip-hop, bop & pop, come and experience how the worlds of hip-hop, pop and jazz becomes one. Kurt Darren is the captain of Afrikaans dance music. Rappers Jack Parow and Early B needs no introduction and Loki Rothman has proven himself as one of South Africa’s leading guitarists. Blake Hellaby is a piano genius and one of Cape Town’s leading jazz musicians and producers.
Tarryn Lamb, Coenie de Villiers, Anton Goosen, Gian Groen, Robert Bolton will perform in Altyd immer on Saturday December 3, at the Oude Libertas Theatre.
Neil Sandilands, Andriëtte Norman, Louis Mhlanga, Sima Mashazi, Albert Frost and Schalk Joubert can all be seen in Waar die hart is on December 2, at 8pm at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre.
Musiekindaba will also give independent and young artists a chance to showcase their talent at a range of smaller concerts in Stellenbosch.
There is also a Street Festival on Friday December 2, that will fill the heart of Stellenbosch with music, food and wine with artists performing in and around Church Street and restaurants in the area being part of the festivities.

Registration is R200 for artists and R400 for the public. Your festival programme, that you will book on the website once you have registered, will be loaded on your Musiekindaba card that can be picked up at the Behrens foyer at the Conservatory on the corner of Victoria and Neethling Street during the Musiekindaba.
Tickets can be bought online at Quicket and from Wednesday November 23, to Monday November 28, there will be a limited amount of tickets per show available at 50% discount via Quicket.
