The Helderberg Golfing Association (HGA) was formed in 1975 by a group of golfers to promote the game of golf, but more importantly, to support charities in Somerset West and surrounding areas.
It is through golfing that members raise funds, from monthly golf days and special events such as Family Day, Christmas Day and weekends away, with which HGA is able to assist local charities that are in need of financial assistance. At the recent HGA dinner and awards evening in October, club captain Sydney Dyamond handed over a cheque for R20 000 to Reinette Evans of Rape Crisis Helderberg. The money will be used to purchase an air conditioning unit for the examination room. Rape Crisis Helderberg is the only rape crisis centre within the 10 towns it serves: Faure, Firgrove, Gordon’s Bay, Grabouw, Lwandle, Macassar, Nomzamo, Sir Lowry’s Pass, Strand and Somerset West.Â
The organisation was formed in 1993 when it became apparent that there was a desperate need in the community for such a service.
