The poet and artist “Juli Jana” will be holding a solo exhibition of paintings and graphics at the Cape Gallery art centre at 60 Church Street in Cape Town.
She spent the past 12 years in England, but has now permanently returned to South Africa. Juli Jana is better known as Juliana Ficker, who grew up in Somerset West, and still has many friends and acquaintances locally whom she would like to meet again at the exhibition. She has had more than 50 art exhibitions in England and South Africa.
Her works have a lyrical, poetic quality and fluidity of expression. She is constantly exploring new perspectives, taking her inspiration from her surroundings, whether city or landscape. This she explores in the abstract.
She says: “I observe spaces, lines, marks, colours and images. These are on walls, skies, landscapes, faces. I am a flâneuse walking the world. Sometimes it is colour that shouts or gently fades; it could be markings on a wall or a space in time that arrests my attention.
“All mediums excite me. I explore pigment from the brush to the canvas, the pressure of the printing press in producing etchings. The medium used to express the idea adds its own characteristic markings and magic. I invite observers to create their own experiences when looking at works.”
The exhibition continues until Saturday December 10. For more information, call 021 423 5309.
