The Hanepoot Big Band, led by trombonist, Jannie ‘Hanepoot’ van Tonder, is back. After a six-year hiatus, Hanepoot will be performing at the Helderberg Nature reserve in Somerset West, on Sunday February 5.
Chris Tokalon, Jasper Cook, Muneeb Hermans, Douglas Armstrong, George Werner, Charl Clayton, Nick Green, Steven Sokuyeka, Andrew O’Donoghue, Matt Willis, Bruce Muirhead and Sidney Mckinnon will also be on stage.
Jannie has been a member of groups like the African Jazz Pioneers, the Gereformeerde Blues Band, Winston’s Jive Mixup, The Blues Broers, and has worked with South African music stalwarts such as Vusi Mahlasela, Basil Coetzee, Sean Bergin, Nico Carstens, James Phillips, Abdullah Ibrahim and Jimmy Dludlu.
The band plays only South African material, most of which are original compositions, covering regular swing and Latin styles, but with a strong focus on indigenous “mbaqanga” and “goema”.
They also perform their own arrangements of South African jazz standards, including classics by Dollar Brand, Hugh Masekela, Chris McGregor, Errol Dyers and Zakes Nkosi.
Pack a picnic, arrive early and enjoy the sunset. Gates open at 3.30pm, and the concert starts at 5.30pm. Tickets cost R60, and R30 for five to 18-year-olds (under-fives free).
All proceeds generated by the Sunset Concerts go towards environmental projects in the reserve.
