Strand Lifesaving Club hosted the Western Province junior and senior championships at Strand beach on Saturday February 24 and Sunday February 25.

Strand ended in seventh place overall with 15 clubs competing at the event. Fish Hoek walked away as overall winners, with Llandudno taking the second place and Big Bay ending in third place. The Strand lifeguards showed their mettle and walked away with many medals, for beach and ocean events.

In the open age group, Rebecca Carter-Smith won a silver medal in the surfswim- and iron woman events. She came third in the run-swim-run event, and teamed up with Sam Hucke, Jessica Mc ilroy and Mila Watson to win a bronze medal in the open female tube rescue and Taplin events.

Kira Bester won the surfski-, iron woman- and board- events in the open age group.

Both Strand junior beach relay teams walked away with medals. The female team of Jess Mc ilroy, Lauren Robb, Taylor Yates and Kelly Zurnamer won a silver medal, while the male team of Raees Benjamin, Jayden Daniels, Cyle Fredericks and Ethan Meintjies won a bronze medal.

The junior Strand beach athletes also did well in their individual events, with Lauren Robb and Bartho Visser each winning the under-19 beach run male and female events respectively, while Jess Mc ilroy ended in second place in the female race.

Taylor Yates won a silver medal in the under-17 age group beach flags event, with Lauren Robb and Cyle Fredericks also ending in second place in the under-19 age group beach flags events.

Cyle Fredericks won a silver medal in the under-19 male beach spring race, while Lauren ended in third place in the female race. Kelly Zurnamer ended in third place in the under-15 age group beach sprint event.

The Strand junior board relay team of Mathew Cilliers, Nicholas Lombard and Daniel Love won a bronze medal in the male junior-

board relay event, while Dan Conradie, Daniel Love and Bartho Visser won a silver medal in the male junior surf-ski relay event.

The Strand junior team also performed well in their individual ocean events with Lauren Robb and Daniel Love ending in second place in the male and female surfswim events in the under-19 age group.

Mila Watson ended in third place in the female surf-ski event for the under-17 age group, with Kira Bester winning the surf-swim, run swim run, board, iron woman and surf-ski events for this age group.

Dylan Hogan won a bronze medal in the under-15 male surf-swim event.
