The South African Surf lifesaving team have returned home from Japan, after competing at the Sanyo Bussan International Lifesaving Cup, ending in an overall fourth place. Somerset College matric pupil Kira Bester was part of this team of five women and five men, who represented South Africa at this event. The competition events are all open beach- based events, testing the lifeguards skills in demanding conditions against some of the best athletes in the world.
Australia won the event, with New Zealand in second place and Japan ending three points ahead of the South African team. Kira, who was part of the South African female team who won gold for the rescue tube rescue event on day two, ended in sixth place in the Individual surf ski event, and in seventh place in the board race event. She is part of the South African youth team, who will represent South Africa at the International Surf Rescue Lifesaving Championships, which is taking place in Durban, at the end of September.
