Dr John David Graham Anderson was born in Gwelo, now Gweru, Zimbabwe on March 14, 1935.
He was schooled at Rhodes Estate Preparatory and Milton outside Bulawayo as a boarder from a very young age.
He qualified as a pharmacist in Bulawayo prior to studying medicine at the University of Cape Town.
In 1968 he moved to Somerset West to join a medical practice in Caledon Street.
Following that he established his own practice at 68 Andries Pretorius Street, and later establishing two other practices – one in Mfuleni and the other in Pringle Bay.
He served the communities of Elgin, Grabouw, Gordon’s Bay, Pringle Bay, Strand, Somerset West, Mfuleni, Khayelitsha and the surrounding communities for over 50 years.
He was highly respected for his diagnostic and surgical skills, and his ability to practice traditional medicine.
Apart from being an exceptional family doctor, he played the violin and guitar. And was often part of the orchestra in many musicals at the Playhouse Theatre.
Amongst his many talents, he loved to cook and played an exceptional game of golf.
Dr Anderson was also a talented artist , trained by Jock Avery . He is listed in the Art Dealers Manual of 1984 as being the third most outstanding water colour artist in South Africa.
He retired at the end of February 2022 at the age of 86 due to poor health, and passed away peacefully on Saturday December 16, 2023.
He is survived by his wife, Ann, four children: Craig, Marion and Nick (son-in-law), Ian and Susan, and his four grandchildren: Natasha, Andrew, Ella Mae and Joshua.
Dr Anderson will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He has left a great void in the Helderberg Community and surrounds.
