Puma South Africa hosted its School of Speed at the Dal Josafat athletics stadium in Paarl recently, and rewarded the top five up-and-coming speedsters with sponsorships to boost their dreams of following in the foot steps of Usain Bolt.
The five rising stars from the Paarl sprint meet are Malesela Senona, 20; Manfred Johannison, 20; Katinka Louw, 16, from La Rochelle; Curwnin Gerste, 16, from Paarl Boys High; and Elke vd Westerhuizen, 16, from Paarl Gymnasium.
The five were among sprinters aged 13 to 20, from Boland and surrounds, who competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and relay sprints, cheered by their families and fellow athletes.
School of Speed vice-principal Henricho Bruintjies was happy to be back at his home track to show his support and hand out medals.
“Paarl is my home town. That’s the track I used to train on everyday growing up. The amount of love and respect I got from the people at the event was absolutely amazing,” said Mr Bruintjies.
The School of Speed, in partnership with Stillwater Sports, aims to develop athletics talent in South Africa by unearthing the fastest sprinters aged 13 to 20.
