The Station Bargain Warehouse and Somerset West Neighbourhood Watch (SWNW) “Declutter and Donate” collaboration for Mandela Day surpassed all expectations, enabling them to donate fabric, haberdashery and crafts far and wide.
Nothing was thrown away; even those off-cuts that seemed too small to re-purpose were used to stuff pillows and donated to an organisation in Lainsburg that works with mistreated dogs. It took quite a bit of sorting, but in the end they divided it among extremely grateful organisations in Loxton, Phillipolis, Upington, Delft, Hermanus, Khayelitsha, Stellenbosch, Strand and Somerset West.
Elise Pauw, owner of Station Bargain Warehouse, said: “It can be easy to hand out donations, but we wanted to make sure that the organisations chosen were well-structured so that our aims could be realised. We wanted the organisations to re-purpose the donations and also to help up-skill and enable people they work with. We met the most inspiring people and cannot wait to see what they will create.
Annetjie Robertson, a co-ordinator with the SWNW, said: “Our heart-felt thanks to all of the wonderful people who donated to this effort. We may well make this an annual event.”
