The exquisite gardens of 317-year-old Vergelegen Estate in Somerset West is a fun, relaxing way for the whole family to find out more about South Africa’s multi-faceted history. Activities at the estate include visiting the 300 year-old English oak tree, exploring the herb garden, rambling along the river, admiring the camellias, studying the story of slavery, and taking a stroll in the camphor forest among others. Opening hours Monday to Sunday are 9am to 4pm, last entry at 4pm.
Entry costs R10 for adults and R5 for pensioners and schoolchilrend. Pensioners enter free on Mondays. Daily hour-long heritage and garden tours depart from the wine tasting centre daily at 9.30am, at R50 a person.
