On Tuesday December 5, a group of 100 grannies and 30 grandpa’s gathered at Oom Sammy Louw’s Church of Calvyn in Macassar for their annual Christmas party.
The festivities commenced with some beautiful singing and messages of inspiration, and a meal of curry and rice was followed by muffins and juice.
Then the big moment arrived for which they had been waiting since early that morning, when the goody bags were handed out. What an absolute delight to see the joy on their faces.
A special gift from a company was a large bag of mealie meal for each person. It was said that this would provide food on Christmas day, for some even for all three meals.
Louie van Rooyen is the driving force behind this initiative, as well as working in the soup kitchen on the premises every Tuesday.
She inspired me not only to help organising the contributors and collecting the contents but also in baking the muffins. She also inspired our many friends to contribute the contents of the goody bags, such as good clothing, scarves, jewellery and toiletries.
Our neighbours packed the bags and we all drove in a convoy to Macassar with our gifts. What an uplifting experience that was.
