■ Dennis Malan, right, chairman of the Malan Family Association, recently addressed the Paarl Rotary Club on the history of the famous RAF pilot “Sailor” Malan. Sailor Malan grew up in Wellington on the farm Versailles, and after a stint in the maritime navy, joined the RAF to be trained as a pilot. He gained fame for his success during the Battle of Britain, and became squadron commander before retiring in South Africa. With Dennis Malan are Rotarians Gerald Truter, left, and Abie Martin (club president).
