Frances Carstens, a Grade 12 pupil at Somerset College in Somerset West, has excelled in sport; at college, at club level, provincial level and at international level.
She played in the under-18 Boland water polo team, she captained Somerset College first hockey team, and she captained the Boland under-18A girls’ hockey team.
Frances was selected to play in the South African under-18A side, who played a tri-series against Australia, and she went on to play in the inaugural Premier Hockey League. She also played a pivotal role in the Somerset West Ladies first hockey team.
At a special award ceremony held in the Paarl Town Hall, Frances was awarded Boland School Sportswoman of the Year and Female School Hockey Player of the Year.
At this same ceremony, Vezi Mntungwa, a Grade 11 Somerset College pupil, was awarded Boland Schools Cricketer of the Year.
Frances, who was head girl at Somerset College this year, has been awarded a scholarship to attend Stanford University in the USA next year.
