In January, the 1st Somerset West Scouts and 1st Gordon’s Bay Sea Scouts went on their annual camp in Grabouw, where 25 scouts camped for five days without electricity or running water. They swam in the river, participated in an obstacle course prepared by the senior scouts, and had some fun before the school year started. 1st Somerset West Cubs made their own boats out of recyclable material and went to Radloff Park to sail them down the river. Last Friday, all the scout groups from the district (1st and 2nd Somerset West, 1st Gordon’s Bay Sea Scouts, 1st Strand, 1st Stellenbosch and 1st Hermanus) all gathered for the annual camp fire, held at 2nd Somerset West’s hall, to commemorate Lord Baden Powell’s birthday, pictured above.
Scouts are holding a fun day fund-raiser at Southey’s Vines in Somerset West, on Sunday March 5, from 10am to 3pm (the last fun day was rained out). There will be carnival rides, craft and food stalls, and a heritage stall, where visitors will be taken on a brief trip through scout history. There will be a raffle with fantastic prizes, and they are looking for the oldest scout or girl guide (regardless of region) to come and share some stories.
