The Donate with Andy, sanitary pads campaign is speedily gaining momentum.
Last week founder of this campaign, Andiswa Sigadla, from Asanda Village, Strand, visited the Chris Hani High School in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, to donate sanitary items and deliver a motivational talk.
This local resident started the campaign after realising the great need amongst pupils for these essential items and often due to the lack of money to purchase it, have to go without.
Something which results in high numbers of school absenteeism, which consequently negatively impacts their schooling. Her goal and something she feels strongly about, is to make a difference one packet of sanitary items at a time.
In launching her campaign, she recently expressed her desire to Bolander to not only help out locally, but also mentioned her wish for the campaign to reach out and impact pupils outside of her immediate communities, and visiting the school in Khayelitsha has now made this goal a reality.
“The school saw my work and my project through your paper and invited me to come and motivate their girls, so I also distributed 200 sanitary pads to the girls,” Ms Sigadla elaborates on this occasion.
The over 200 packs of sanitary towels, were made possible by generous donors and supporters of the campaign.
“I spoke to grade 8 students from the school. The school had a camp for them and so as to equipp them with some knowledge since they are experiencing a high number of pupils who are dropping out of school due to pregnancy and drugs, so they asked me and my team to go and motivate them,” she explains.
The Donate with Andy campaign was initiated and launched earlier this year with the intention of with the collection and distribution of sanitary items and hygiende products, aim to restore the dignity of young girls and boys who might not have the means to afford these necessities.
With each distributional outreach, Ms Sigadla and her team also use the chance to speak about issues affecting the youth, to equip them with skills on how to handle and cope with these issues as well as to motivate them to rise above their circumstances.
