Eleven-year-old Rocco Da Silva, a Grade 4 pupil at Somerset College in Somerset West, is doing his bit for the environment. The founder of The Future Kids (TFK) beach cleanup club, Rocco staged his first beach cleanup in 2018, and since then TFK, has collected 1 740kg of litter in 19 beach cleanups. “I started the club because I wanted to make a difference by removing litter from the beaches in Strand, and spreading awareness and showing children that they need to take action,” Rocco says. “We host beach cleanups monthly on Strand Dog Beach or the Strand marine protected area, and we work closely with many other ocean-minded initiatives, including the Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement.”
