As a newcomer to the Western Cape, I wish to raise an extremely critical topic for the survival of this whole region.
When I arrived 10 years ago, the ANC provincial government had been replaced by the Democratic Alliance. As far as I know
they had read the projected climate change reports and were fully aware that very low winter rainfall would be the normin future.
Why then did they not get desalinators up and running years ago?
To fall back on using groundwater extraction would surely affect the surface water and destroy or desertify the fynbos and wine industry?
Most people I know are extremely puzzled by the whole scenario, and I think the educated public deserves not only an explanation from the politicians and municipal administrators, but
from the groundwater hydrologists as well.
