The City is inviting the public to take part in beach clean-ups in the Blaauwberg area as part of Clean-Up and Recycle SA Week from Monday September 16 to Saturday September 21.
The week of beach clean-ups builds up to International Coastal Clean-up Day on Saturday September 21, according to mayoral committee member for spatial planning and environment Eddie Andrews.
Participants should take their own gloves. City staff will provide bags.
“More than 700 000 volunteers in 120 countries around the world take part in the world’s biggest clean-up. The beach clean-ups will focus on the coast from Melkbosstrand to the Eerste Steen Resort. Residents are invited to join between 9am and noon next week,” Mr Andrews said.
Here are the meeting spots for the clean-ups:
- Monday September 16: Melkbosstrand parking area, 1st Avenue.
- Tuesday September 17: Holbaai parking area, Otto du Plessis Drive.
- Wednesday September 18: Kelpbaai parking, Otto du Plessis Drive.
- Thursday September 19: Kreeftebaai parking, Otto du Plessis Drive.
- Friday September 20: Derdesteen parking, Otto du Plessis Drive.
- Saturday September 21: Eerste Steen Resort, Otto du Plessis Drive.
“I ask residents who have some time available in the morning next week to please join us and assist with the beach clean-ups. Our team is ready to meet you and will appreciate all the help we can get. It’s the perfect opportunity to soak up some of that sunshine and fresh air we have been missing all during the winter months.
“Those who can only come on Saturday, please join us down at Eerste Steen Resort on September 21 for International Coastal Clean-up Day. We can all lend a hand to ensure that this famous and beautiful stretch of coastline is kept in the most pristine condition possible,” said Mr Andrews.
