Polani is off to France

Becoming a story teller seemed to be a natural fit for Paarl screenwriter, Polani Fourie.

“I grew up with a father who had the natural ability to attract a camp full of children to come listen to his stories – which he would often dream up on the spot. I’m daughter to a mother who sang opera at the Artcape Theatre. Henceforth I cannot help but be in this field – it’s engraved into my essence and encapsulates everything that I’m good at,” she says.

After studying at Potchefstroom University for her BCom honours degree, she embarked on a film project titled “Unite – The Impossible Possibility”, centred around the Vryburg model of change and the journey of its heroes, which tells the true story of the positive changes South Africa has experienced in recent years since the end of the apartheid era, by showcasing the events that unfolded, and the individuals responsible for bringing about meaningful change at Vryburg High School, that impacted the community at large.

The Rocaberti Mentoring Programme for Screenwriters in France takes place from Thursday October 12 to Tuesday October 17 and Polani plans to be there.

It is a mentorship programme aimed at developing story telling skills and ultimately taking film projects to the next level. The competition is supported by The International Screenwriters’ Association which allows entries from screenwriters from across the globe, and Polani is the first South African screenwriter to be admitted to the programme.

Faced with an opportunity to follow her dreams on an international scale and sharpen her skill set, Polani has turned to crowdfunding on donations-based crowdfunding platform, BackaBuddy to secure the remaining R35 000 she needs to attend the elite programme.

Polani has so far raised
R1 028.20 towards her goal of R35 000.
