On Saturday September 17, there will be a festive atmosphere at Radloff Park in Somerset West, when members of the Friends of Radloff Park (FORP), and the general public, are invited to join the occasion of planting trees to celebrate Arbor Week, from 10am to 12.30pm.
The City of Cape Town has donated 10 Outeniqua yellowwoods, 10 wild olives, and 20 assegaai trees, and five of these trees will be auctioned on the day, with a reserve price of R200 each – and City workers will be on hand to help plant the trees, with the winning bidders (the holes will be prepared). A commemorative plaque will be placed at the auctioned trees as soon as they have been made. The remainder of the trees will be planted during Arbor Week.
Come along in support of this green initiative, and bring your wallet, as there will be boerewors rolls and soft drinks for sale, as well as special T-shirts with a logo depicting the event, kindly donated by Nicki Reck of Orange Wall.
As a committee member of FORP, I am always humbled by the amount of work my fellow committee members put into their dedication towards this beautiful green space we all get to enjoy, with our canine companions, on walks, bicycles and even rolling up trouser legs and cooling our feet in the pristine Lourens River.
This past Sunday, September 11, was my beloved dad’s first birthday away from us, since his death in January, and I’ll be one of the bidders for a tree, so that he can also be part of the this green paradise as “his” indigenous tree grows in years to come.
