Permits to be granted for informal food traders

The City of Cape Town will be granting permits to informal food traders during the lockdown.

This follows the relaxation of the lockdown regulations which were announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa when he declared a national State of Disaster and issued regulations to combat the spread of the virus and a 21-day lockdown.

The initial regulations limited the services provided and the movement of people. The City suspended all informal trading activities as part of the interventions to complement the initial regulations.

Last week, the regulations were amended by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, allowing for informal food trading (excluding cooked food) during the lockdown with the proper permit.

The basket of goods that are allowed include:

·         fruit and vegetables

·         fresh meat and fish

·         sweets and cool drinks.

Trading is only allowed from 8am to 5pm and traders have to wear mask and gloves. They must also have saniters and water. A distance of a metre apart should be maintained between trading stalls. Traders should have the permit available for inspection at all times.

Permits will be issued by designated officials of the City’s administration dealing with informal trading in the Area Economic Development branch.
