Open gardens festival springs forth

Spring is around the corner, with scented blooms awakening the senses.

There will be some interesting private gardens in and around the Helderberg open to the public on Saturday September 8 and Sunday September 9, from 9am to 4pm, to benefit Helderberg Hospice.

Tickets cost R90 and are available at Helderberg Hospice from Friday September 7 to Sunday September 9, from 9am to 4pm each day. The heart of the festival this year is the Helderberg Hospice Garden.

This garden has many different facets, which means that each season brings its own beauty. The garden also brings peace and joy to many patients and their families by providing a gentle, serene, comforting space in which to reflect and contemplate.

Sadly, dealing with the loss of a precious loved one is a challenge that we will all experience during our lifetime.

This is one of the most painful and traumatic events we will ever undergo, and healing from the grief is a long and heart-rending process. In an effort to assist with the healing process, Helderberg Hospice has established a Garden of Remembrance in their existing garden.

The garden is a safe and tranquil haven for all members of the Helderberg community to visit and spend time remembering and paying tribute to family members and friends who have passed on. Helderberg Hospice, aware of the limited water resources in the Western Cape, has gone to great lengths to ensure that the garden is as water wise as possible.

A dedicated team of garden volunteers spends a lot of time and energy nurturing and caring for the gardens, sharing their expertise and experience in an inspiring, selfless labour of love.

The garden will be open on Friday September 7, a day earlier than the private open gardens. Visitors are encouraged to buy tickets on Friday, so that they have the full day on Saturday and Sunday to visit the open gardens.

Tour the garden, then relax with some tea and treats, and browse the tables – there will be plants for sale, gardening books, and lots more.
