Somerset College Preparatory School recently opened its new outdoor learning space (OLS) designed to aid learning.
By committing to learning both inside and outside the classroom, teachers are able to teach children that learning occurs everywhere, at all times.
Pupils understand better what learning means, often assuming it is something that only occurs when a book is open and a pen is in hand.
High-quality outdoor learning experiences are proven to develop reflective and inquisitive thinking along with problem-solving approaches in “real” situations.
These spaces develop resilience and adaptability, as well as develop confidence
and self-esteem and collaborative working and communication
skills.
The outdoor learning space is the first of its kind at the preparatory school.
This space is set to challenge the focus of teaching, in that it brings the environment and its beauty closer to the children.
