Somerset West novelists, Paul English and Chris Hall, both have new novels published this autumn; and as the season turns, what’s better than to curl up by the fire with a good book?
Paul’s novel, Fade: Shadows of the Past, is the third of his series of fantasy novels, and marks a new chapter in his universe of cleverly-crafted superhero characters.
Paul highlights the popularity of other media in the genre in which he writes: “Having recently attended the annual FanCon convention in Cape Town, where I mingled among hundreds of fans and cosplayers, and where I bought myself a stack of comics and trade paperbacks, I realised how many like-minded fans are out there.
“Even more recently, the movie blockbuster, Avengers: Endgame, of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which I saw at the cinema at Somerset Mall, was a complete sell-out. There are so many local comic/superhero fans.”
Chris’s novel, You’ll Never Walk Alone, is set against the background of gritty 1980s Liverpool, and follows the adventures of a group of people who share a house.
It’s a tale of love and loss, thieves and gangsters, and ultimate reunion and redemption. There are mysteries to be solved and a few laughs along the way. And don’t forget your dancing shoes and footy boots.
Chris and Paul are throwing a book launch party at Chelsea Café @ Gallery 91, 91 Andries Pretorius Street, on Friday May 31, from 5.30pm to 7pm, where you can gather round the cosy fire and enjoy a glass of wine and some warming soup.
The event will include a Q&A session with the authors, a prize draw and a selection of book-related giveaway items. Paul and Chris’s back catalogue novels will also be for sale, and a range of limited edition prints of the artwork created for Chris’s novel by her artist husband, Cliff Davies.
