New Elgin festival celebrates ‘all things apple’

Applewood Preparatory School in Elgin will host the first Applewood Harvest Market on Saturday May 7, as the region marks the end of the harvest with a celebration of all things apple.

Visitors can expect apple bobbing, hay diving, tractor rides, mini-zipline, a dog show and hoop throwing.

Early risers can get an Autumn morning start at 8am when the Tru-Cape Trail Running Challenge begins. This 11km run winds through a circular route of fynbos and farmlands along with a 5km family run. Plenty of prizes are in store to keep athletes motivated.

The trail runs start at 8am, while the family fun run starts at 8.30am, but get there early to register.

Afterwards, festival-goers can replenish at the Applewood Harvest Market with food stalls from Elgin’s authentic smokehouse, The Hickory Shack, country gourmet food from The Pool Room Restaurant, padkos favourites and freshly squeezed apple juices from Peregrine Farm Stall and artisanal food and products from Terra Mad-re.

Visitors can also go to the apple stall for apple tastings, apple pies, toffee apples and apples by the bag as well as hand-crafted apple stationery.

Soups, farm breads, candy floss, kettlecorn, Belgian waffles and snacks will also be for sale.

Some of Elgin’s top wine-makers will be present, including Oak Valley, Cluver Wines, Almenkerk, Shannon Wines, Spioenkop and Thorne and Daughters – with Elgin’s craft cider-makers Cluver Jack, Eversons and Windemere and local craft beer, Boomer’s Brew.

Shoppers can browse jewellery, clothes, accessories and homeware while organic vegetables, honey and flowers from the Valley will also be for sale.

Live music from Gian Groen will have festival-goers hunkering down on the hay bales as the children are entertained with a host of old-fashioned games at the Little People’s Festival.

Market-goers can arrive from 9am, with the day ending at around 3pm.

Tickets for the Tru-Cape Trail Running Challenge are R100 for the 11km and R50 for the 5km and are available on
