Bevan Sylvester, a well-known face in the Helderberg through his work in the ministry, and his passion for music and helping the poor, has initiated a project called Music for Meals. He says: “This was after a sad feeling dawned on me when I had to cancel a concert commemorating the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Local charities were going to be beneficiaries.” Music for Meals entailed posting piano solos of songs that people find meaningful and inspiring Bevan’s Facebook page. “My choice included Billy Joel’s Piano Man, Memory from Cats and The Prayer. For good measure I threw in an Afrikaans song, Kinders van die Wind, and even a fun one, Ag Pleez Daddy. Those who watched and enjoyed the videos were kindly asked for a donation in cash or kind,” he said. These contributions were dispensed to children’s charities in the Helderberg Basin and needy families. Helderberg Child Welfare, Circle of Unity and Isaiah’s Call are some of the charities Bevan was able to help. “I am grateful to all those who donated. Bringing light in the darkness is always a privilege for me, and I hope that I can do so for a long time to come,” he said.
