Martin Wigand, Somerset West
For five weeks we did not receive a single item of mail. No bank statements, no invoices, no magazines.
Then on Tuesday May 22, a big bundle arrived. I was relieved, but also curious about the reason for this delay.
Did somebody accumulate mail under their bed? Was somebody sick without suitable replacement?
I went to Somerset West Post Office to find out. When I heard the reason, I had to laugh in utter disbelief.
The manager told me that the sorting department in Somerset West had had no electricity for five weeks, therefore they could not sort any mail.
And why no electricity? Because they had not paid their account. And why do we not hear about it? Oh, the manager said, because they will never publish negative news about the post office.
So I understood, we just need to be positive.
