More than 50 pets from impoverished homes in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village will be sterilised at no cost to their owners, thanks to a fundraising concert hosted by local singer/songwriter Soné Joubert at Helderberg Rugby Club, on Saturday August 31.
Soné, 27, the runner-up in this year’s The Voice SA competition, sang to a packed audience that was soon on its feet dancing to a mixed repertoire of
Afrikaans ballads, hard rock
and foot-stomping family favourites.
She was supported by another local musician, Rooiwyn Pro-
feet.
“I’m here tonight to sing for the animals, and I thank you for your support,” Soné told her fans, explaining how she and EberVet Vetshop colleague Eileen van der Watt had come up with the idea for this fund-raiser after working in Sir
Lowry’s Pass Village on Mandela Day.
It was while handing out food parcels and blankets for pets from poor homes that they noticed the desperate need for sterilisation so they proposed a mass sterilisation clinic to EberVet Community Veterinary Care CEO, Dr Hilldidge Beer – if they could raise the funding.
Dr Beer readily agreed and with the proceeds from Saturday’s concert, a minimum of 50 pets will now be spayed and neutered.
People are finding it difficult to feed themselves, let alone litters of puppies and kittens.
By curtailing the numbers of puppies and kittens we are making it easier for pet owners to care for the pets they have.
“Sterilisation also protects against illnesses such as mammary and testicular cancers, and because it stops dogs and cats roaming and fighting, fewer contagious diseases are spread,” Dr Beer said, “and that’s good for all pet owners.”
Ticket holders to Saturday’s fund-raiser were rewarded with a selection of prizes, including a weekend at the five-star Sky Villa in Plettenburg Bay, spa and salon vouchers and dozens of pet hampers sponsored by Vetsbrands, Hill’s, Royal Canin, Acana and Vondi’s.
“When times are tough in a country, the most vulnerable are its children and animals.
“Thanks to Soné sharing her talent with us, and her colleague Eileen’s hard work in putting this event together, at least 50 animals will enjoy healthier, happier lives,” Dr Beer said.
The mass pet sterilisation clinic for Sir Lowry’s Pass Village will be scheduled before the end of this year.
