■ What better way to celebrate Women’s Day than by hosting an influential woman in the Somerset West community, Dr Cathy Donald, to address the senior preparatory pupils at Reddam House. Cathy is a general practitioner and a published author, and a role-model for young women. Her two novels are Miles to Go and The Reluctant Cuckoo. To coincide with the school’s Literacy Week, Cathy spoke about her experience of writing, and afterwards the senior preparatory pupils had a readathon, where they got to camp in the hall for the rest of the morning. The pupils set up tents and snuggled up in sleeping bags for some hours of uninterrupted reading. The teachers and pupils from the junior preparatory dressed up as their favourite book characters, as part of their Literacy Week celebrations. A wide range of characters turned up, to name a few – Dr Seuss’s Cat-in-the-Hat and Thing 1, Willy Wonka from Roald Dahl’s well-known novel and JK Rowling’s wizard hero, Harry Potter.
