Tomorrow it’s “Last Thursday” again, on Thursday March 30, and the galleries in Stellenbosch will once more be keeping their doors open until 8pm, to invite locals and visitors alike to view some of the best art works in South Africa.
The US Museum in Ryneveld Street will be displaying the exhibition curated particularly for the US Woordfees.
This includes a retrospective exhibition of works by the festival artist, Athi-Pathra Ruga. Born in Mthatha and working in Cape Town, Ruga has developed a series of avatars, each in reaction to diverse social issues such as xenophobia, nationalistic politics, transformation rites, Western domination and popular culture.
The Absolut Art Gallery in Ryneveld Street has a collection of sculptures by the dynamic artist Anton Smit, as well as paintings by Pierneef and work by Marlene Dumas, among others. The Oude Leeskamer Gallery in Drostdy Street, opposite NG Moederkerk, specialises in South African artists.
Back in Church Street, Vincent da Silva welcomes yout with his life-size animal bronze animal figures, and Palette Gallery across the road gives opportunity to a variety of artists to exhibit their works.
Teresa Decinti, who personally welcomes visitors into her gallery, and The Farmer’s Daughter in Dorp Street awaits visitors in Dorp Street, and the Elizabeth Galloway Fashion Institute’s students will also be participating in “Last Thursday”.
The outdoor sculpture exhibition, Hiervandaan, which the Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust has placed at various strategic places throughout the town centre.
Head to 135 Bird Street to Ghetto Art Gallery where Bongi “Kwela” Flepu and Vuyo Mgijima will introduce you to the vibrant Kayamandi art scene.
