Language Monument hosts choir festival

The DF Malan High School choir, pictured, is one of 15 choirs that will be performing at the Language Monuments choir festival on Saturday April 14.

The Afrikaans Language Monument presents a choir festival in the amphitheatre on Saturday April 14.

School and community choirs will put their best notes forward to entertain guests with a wide variety of music.

“One of the goals of this festival is to promote choral music,” says Christine Bam, co-organiser and a mezzo soprano and vocal coach.

“There is no competition or judging linked to this event. It’s a fun event for choirs to sing, enjoy the day and network with other choirs.”

The day also offers an opportunity for choirs to raise funds through ticket sales, while giving pupils, their families and the wider audience a chance to share their love of music with each other.

The 15 choirs are from Frank Pietersen Music Centre, Brackenfell High School, DF Malan High School, Jan van Riebeeck High School, HTS Drostdy, Namaqualand High School, Junior Campus Private School, Kensington Chorale Girls, LMS La Rochelle, Paul Roos Gymnasium, Protea Heights Academy, Saxonsea Primary, Paarl Boys School, JG Meiring High School and the East District Community Choir.

The official opening will take place at 6pm, after which all the choirs will perform individually before closing off with a mass choir work Amavolovolo, arranged by Rudolf de Beer. The hope is that this festival will become an annual event.

Tickets cost R120 for adults and R60 for children under 12 and can be bought at the participating schools until Wednesday April 11, after which they will be available at Computicket and on the day at the venue.

The gates open at 5pm and numerous stalls will provide visitors with food and beverages.

Visitors are requested to dress warmly.

Unfortunately, no fires, dogs, own food or beverages are allowed. Access is controlled, and sufficient parking is available.
